Subject: Request to withdraw temporary/contractual appointment of nurses and ensure permanent employment for eligible nurses – Reg.

Respected Sir,

Greetings. Many economically disadvantaged and ordinary families across Tamil Nadu have educated their children in nursing schools and colleges with the hope that they will secure employment as nurses. It is particularly significant that a large proportion of these nursing graduates are women and first-generation graduates. Many of them are eagerly waiting for employment opportunities in the Tamil Nadu Government.

The Government of Tamil Nadu has now issued an order to fill vacant nursing posts on an 11-month temporary contractual basis. The conditions reportedly state that nurses appointed under this arrangement will not be considered Government employees, may be terminated at any time without prior notice, and will not have any right to claim permanent employment in the future.

In the past, many such nursing vacancies were filled through the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB), providing a transparent recruitment process and a pathway to regular Government service.

Furthermore, orders have been issued for the contractual appointment of teaching staff in the six new nursing colleges announced in the Legislative Assembly under Rule 110.

In addition, orders have been issued for the redeployment/reduction of existing permanent nursing posts in Government hospitals. Such measures raise serious concerns regarding the availability of permanent nursing posts and future employment opportunities for qualified nursing graduates.

These decisions have created considerable concern among nursing graduates, particularly first-generation graduates and young women from economically disadvantaged families who have invested years in their education with the expectation of securing Government employment.

A strong and sustainable public healthcare system requires not only adequate infrastructure but also a stable and adequately staffed workforce. Nurses who provide essential healthcare services should therefore have secure and dignified employment conditions.

Therefore, I humbly request the Hon’ble Chief Minister to 

1) Withdraw the decision to appoint nurses on an 11-month temporary contractual basis.

2) Withdraw the decision to appoint teaching staff in the six new nursing colleges on a contractual basis.

3) Stop the reduction/redeployment of existing permanent nursing posts.

4) Fill vacant permanent nursing posts through the established recruitment process.

5) As per the election promise, regularize all eligible temporary/contract nurses who have completed the prescribed period of service.

I sincerely hope that the Government of Tamil Nadu will consider the concerns of thousands of nursing graduates and take appropriate steps to protect their employment opportunities and the future of the nursing profession.
